On January 7, Associate Professor Zhao Zhiyong from Huazhong University of Science and Technology was invited to this School to give a special academic report entitled "Spatial-division Multiplexed Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing". The presentation was hosted by Associate Professor Wu Zhichao, and more than 70 graduate students from this School attended the presentation.

Zhao Zhiyong, associate professor, doctoral supervisor, is mainly engaged in the research on multi-dimensional multiplexed optical fiber sensing technology, integrated communication and sensing fusion system, special optical fibers and devices, advanced optical signal processing technology, nonlinear fiber optics, microwave photonics, etc. He has published more than 50 papers in mainstream journals and international authoritative conferences in the field of optical fiber optics, and has presided over one project under the National Key Research and Development Program, one Youth Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and one project under the Hubei Key Research and Development Program.

The report introduced the research progress of distributed optical fiber sensor based on spatial-division multiplexed fiber. Firstly, he introduced the basic contents related to multi-core fiber technology, including the types of multi-core fiber, preparation scheme of multi-core multiplexer/de-multiplexer, formation mechanism of bending sensitive characteristic of multi-core fiber eccentric core, etc. On this basis, he shares around the distributed bending/shape sensing based on spatial-division multiplexed fiber, distributed multi-parameter distinguishable measurement, dynamic range/measurement accuracy/frequency response performance improvement of sensing system, ultra-long distance vibration sensing, and φ-OTDR interference fading suppression.

The report delivered by Associate Professor Zhao Zhiyong was an in-depth and very professional introduction to distributed optical fiber sensors based on spatial-division multiplexed fiber. After the presentation, our faculty and students had an in-depth exchange with Mr. Zhao on issues such as interference fading, fiber distortion, and dynamic measurement range in optical fiber sensing system.
