About the speaker:

PhD, associate professor of College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University, “333 High-Level Talent Program Training Object of Jiangsu Province, Deputy Director of Shenzhen R&D Center under the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Optical Sensing and Regulation Technology of the Ministry of Education, Nanjing University, Executive Director of the Opto-electromechanical Technology and System Integration Branch of China Instrument and Control Society, Member of the Optical Electromechanical Committee of Chinese Optical Society, Member of the Optical Education Committee of the Chinese Optical Society, and Member of the Education and Teaching Committee of Jiangsu Instrument and Control Society. He graduated from Southeast University with a bachelor's degree in 2006 and graduated from Nanjing University with a PhD degree in 2011. He joined Nanyang Technological University in Singapore as a postdoctoral researcher in the same year, joined Nanjing University as an assistant researcher in 2012 and was promoted to associate professor in 2015. His main research interests are mechanism research and instrumentation design of distributed fiber optic sensing systems. He has published 139 high-level journal or conference papers in this field, applied for/obtained 130 invention/utility model patents, of which 95 have been granted and 8 have realized technology transfer. He has received 3 first-class awards and 1 second-class award for scientific and technological progress at provincial and ministerial level. In recent years, as the project leader or main participant, he has participated in 30 research projects supported by the state, province and ministries and enterprises.

Presentation summary:

The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflection (Φ-OTDR) sensing system has the characteristics of high dynamic response and high sensitivity, and has great potential for application in the field of large engineering structure health monitoring. The instrumentation level and engineering application of the Φ-OTDR system depend largely on the digital signal processing (DSP) technology. This paper compares and analyzes the main digital signal processing methods and techniques for signal quantization, demodulation, noise suppression and pattern recognition in Φ-OTDR systems in recent years, and illustrates the importance and methods of combining digital signal processing with industry background knowledge in engineering applications through application examples such as overhead transmission line condition monitoring and buried cable external breakage warning, and summarizes and outlooks the development status and trends of digital signal processing methods in Φ-OTDR systems.
