On August 19th, the Fifth National Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers came to a successful conclusion at Beijing Institute of Technology. Associate Professor Xu Linhong and her team from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information, with their solid teaching innovation practices and outstanding performance, successfully won the third prize in the Associate Senior Group for New Engineering Disciplines, bringing honor to the school!

The National Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers, guided by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, hosted by the China Association of Higher Education, and organized by Beijing Institute of Technology, takes “promoting teaching innovation and cultivating first-class talents” as its core theme. It is an important benchmark event for advancing new engineering construction and deepening higher education teaching reform.

Xu Linhong's team competed with their course “Metal Materials and Heat Treatment,” steadfastly upholding their commitment to “cultivating high-caliber ‘craftsmen’ for a manufacturing power.” To address the three major challenges in course instruction, namely, the lack of a holistic engineering perspective, disconnection from real-world engineering problems, and insufficient internalization of values, the team innovatively integrated OBE concept with constructivist theory, and established a new engineering talent cultivation model featuring three chains and three expansions: “expanding the knowledge supply chain to enrich wisdom, extending the innovation practice chain to promote innovation, and broadening the ideological and political education chain to forge the soul”. Simultaneously, they developed the “M-PBL+ seven-step progression" deep learning classroom and reconstructed a “three integrations, three levels, and three elements” evaluation system based on a digital and intelligent platform, truly achieving comprehensive integration and collaborative optimization of students' knowledge acquisition, competency enhancement, and value shaping.

After years of dedicated effort in curriculum development and practical application, the "Metal Materials and Heat Treatment" course has yielded fruitful results: it has been successively approved as a national-level online first-class course and a provincial-level new engineering course. It continues to play an active role in curriculum demonstration, promotion and social service, becoming one of the benchmark courses for teaching reform in our school.

It is reported that this contest underwent rigorous selection at the university and provincial levels, with only 2,253 teachers (teams) from 588 courses nationwide advancing to the national finals. Ultimately, 88 first prizes, 205 second prizes and 295 third prizes were awarded. The breakthrough and award-winning performance of Associate Professor Xu Linhong’s team in the national competition not only fully demonstrates the team's teaching prowess but also represents a significant achievement in our school's efforts to promote teaching innovation and enhance the cultivation of new engineering talents. Meanwhile, the team led by Associate Professor Zhang Qi from the School of Economics and Management secured the third prize in the associate senior group for new liberal arts at the provincial competition, and our university was awarded the Excellent Organization Prize at the provincial competition, marking another impressive achievement in teaching innovation for the university.

In the future, the school will take this award as an opportunity to further deepen curriculum teaching reforms, promote excellent teaching experiences, inspire more teachers to engage in teaching innovation practices, continuously enhance the quality of talent cultivation, and contribute more strength to serving the strategy of building a powerful manufacturing nation and promoting the high-quality development of higher education!
