Wuhan Urban Construction Engineering Company Deepens School-Enterprise Cooperation with the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information to Explore a New Future of Intelligent Construction

On the morning of March 27, 2025, a delegation of 10 people, including Wu Zhizhen, Chief Engineer of Wuhan Urban Construction Engineering Company, and Xie Xuebin, Deputy Chief Engineer, came to this School for survey and exchange. Qu Xianghua, secretary of the Party Committee of the School, Ning Fulong, dean of the School, and experts and scholars in related fields participated in the symposium. The two sides conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as intelligent construction, robotics and intelligent geological equipment, to jointly explore the school-enterprise collaborative innovation and development path.

 

At the symposium, Ge Mingfeng, head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, firstly introduced the scientific achievements of the School in the field of intelligent geological equipment, robotics and fiber optic sensing. He stated that the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information has built a three-dimensional research system of “land, sea and air” with the characteristics of "intelligence + geoscience", and has formed core competitiveness especially in areas such as special robots and industrial Internet of Things. In recent years, the School has undertaken more than 30 national key research and development programs and national defense projects, and the research results, such as heavy-duty robotic arm and multi-robot collaborative control system, have been applied to nuclear power, power grid and other fields.

Chief Engineer Wu Zhizhen highly praised the research strength of the school and introduced the intelligent needs of Wuhan Urban Construction in bridge engineering and municipal infrastructure construction. He pointed out that the group is accelerating the transformation of intelligent construction and hopes to cooperate with the school in areas such as bridge health monitoring, welding robots, and narrow space operation equipment to solve industry pain points such as low construction efficiency and high safety risks.

In terms of intelligent bridge detection, the School proposed a solution that integrated fiber optic sensing, 3D scanning, and AI algorithms to address the challenges of posture monitoring in bridge rotation and top pushing operations, achieving dynamic control of the construction process.

In terms of the research and development of welding robots, in response to the high requirements for welding accuracy and high labor costs of steel box girders, the School team demonstrated their independently developed six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm system, which can achieve precise welding through visual recognition and path planning.

In terms of customized special equipment, based on the construction needs of the group, both parties planned to jointly develop modular robots suitable for scenarios such as pipeline dredging and concrete cutting, to reduce manual dependence and improve operational safety.

Chief Engineer Xie Xuebin emphasized that the group will establish a special science and technology innovation fund to support joint research and development between the school and enterprise, and provide engineering sites as experimental bases. He expected to promote the rapid implementation and transformation of scientific research results through the mode of “solving problems for enterprises by universities”.

Dean Ning Fulong stated that the School will continue to promote the deep integration of disciplines such as robotics engineering and intelligent manufacturing with the construction industry. It is hoped that the two sides will establish a joint laboratory, build a “training base for intelligent construction talents”, and explore a collaborative education mechanism of “curriculum co-construction + project training + employment docking”.
