In order to further understand the difficulties and problems faced by students who have changed majors in their daily study and life, and to help them quickly integrate into the learning environment and pace of the new majors, the School held an exchange meeting for them in Room 103 of the one-stop community of No. 63 Building 63 in West Area of the campus on the afternoon of November 28. Wu Di, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the School, Hao Guocheng, member of the Party Committee of the School and dean of the Department of Communication Engineering, Yin Jingchuan and Tu Siyi from the Teaching Operations Office of the Undergraduate School, Pan Li, undergraduate teaching secretary of the School, as well as all the students of Grade 2023 who have changed majors, attended this meeting, which was chaired by Adili, counselor for Grade 2023.
Firstly, Adili presented an overview of the students of Grade who have changed majors, pointing out that the number of students who have transferred to our school is large and their professional backgrounds are diverse, and that the differences in the foundation of their freshman studies lead to varying adaptations in their new majors. Subsequently, five student representatives shared their learning and living experiences since the start of the school year. In terms of learning, some students praised the strong learning atmosphere in our school, but also mentioned that the pressure of learning is especially significant for first-year transfer students without a background in basic subjects due to the heavy and difficult courses. Some students emphasized the importance of self-motivation, believing that inner strength is the source of overcoming gaps and achieving self-growth, and that being fully engaged in learning can effectively alleviate physical and mental exhaustion. In terms of daily life, some students reflected the inconvenience caused by accommodation arrangements after transferring majors, such as scheduling conflicts and reduced communication due to differences in majors with their original dormitory classmates, which in turn led to feelings of loneliness, weakened sense of belonging and happiness, and difficulty in quickly integrating into the new class. In response, they expressed their desire to adjust their dormitory arrangements and live with their current classmates. In terms of the learning environment, some students mentioned the difference in the learning environment between the excellent mechanical class and the regular class, and expressed concerns about the possible grade differentiation.
During the free exchange session, the leaders and teachers gave patient and detailed answers to all kinds of questions raised by the students. Tu Siyi suggested that students should plan reasonably according to their own actual situation, set goals, and reduce unnecessary internal friction. Wu Di quoted the story of Tang Monk sweeping a tower in "Journey to the West" to encourage his classmates to take things as they came, focus on the present, and bravely take responsibility for their choices. When facing loneliness and difficulties, one should take the initiative to seek help from teachers or fellow students in the same field and establish a new social support system. Pan Li emphasized the importance of setting short-term goals, focusing on the essence of learning, facing problems squarely, and sticking to the original intention, and suggested slowing down the pace appropriately.
Finally, Hao Guocheng made a concluding speech. He inspired students to set up ambitious goals, even if they are currently in a so-called “trough”, which is actually a necessary path to climb the peak of life, and they should enjoy the process of constantly challenging themselves and crossing the peak. He emphasized that transferring to our school is a valuable and rewarding choice that will add more possibilities to their future development. The difficulty of the course is what makes it worthwhile, and the daily hard work is a necessary part of the road to growth.
Through this exchange meeting, students not only gained a clearer understanding of their learning goals, but also learned how to adjust their mentality and self adjustment. With more enthusiasm and firm determination, they will continue to climb new heights in their studies and life.
