Struggling for a Bright Future —— A Letter to the New Students of Grade 2023 of the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Informat​ion

 Dear new students of Grade 2023,

Welcome you to the city of heroes, to meet at the foot of the beautiful Nanwang Mountain, to start a new learning life and to open a new chapter in your life at the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) by the beautiful lotus pond.

This year, a total of 640 new students, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, joined our school family. The hardships of studying hard have not made you give up, and the tribulations of the three-year epidemic have not stopped your progress. It is your strength and perseverance that makes today’s wonderful gathering possible. In the report of the 20th National Congress of CPC, General Secretary Xi Jinping sent a message to young people: “The young people should unswervingly follow the instructions and guidance of the Party, embrace dreams and be down-to-earth, dare to think, dare to do and do well, and aspire to be good young people of the new era who have ideals, dare to take responsibility, can endure hardship and are willing to struggle.” In order to achieve this goal, both teachers and students will work together. As your teacher, there are a few points I hope to share with you:

We hope you have ideals and firm beliefs. Ideals are the lighthouse that guides the growth and progress of young people, and their ideals and beliefs have a bearing on the future of the country. To realize the ambitious goals set by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, complete the tasks deployed by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and cope with more complex and severe risks and challenges, it is necessary for ambitious young people to have lofty ideals and persist in striving for them. We hope that you will thoroughly implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, consciously apply the positions, viewpoints, and methods therefrom to correctly answer the ideological perplexities that you encounter with regard to ideals and realities, doctrines and problems, self-interest and altruism, the small self and the big self, and the nation and the world, and deepen in your hearts and minds the sincere trust in the Party, the heartfelt love of the country, and the unremitting pursuit of lofty ideals.

We hope you are eager to learn and practice. The School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information has a long history of education, strong disciplinary strength, and strong teaching staff, where you can obtain rich educational resources and ample opportunities for exercise. In university, more emphasis is placed on self-directed learning, so you need to develop your own interest in learning and set clear learning goals. We hope that you will harbor curiosity about knowledge and the world, take the initiative to learn and create, and enjoy every process of learning. We also hope that you will take the initiative to participate in social practice, actively join student organizations and student clubs, accumulate knowledge and experience that cannot be acquired in the classroom, and continuously improve your comprehensive quality and ability in practice. By striving to achieve these goals, your college life will be fulfilling and energetic, exciting and meaningful.

We hope you are kind and grateful to others. University is also a small society, where you will meet a lot of new classmates and new teachers. You will spend four years or more together day and night, and you have to quickly integrate into the new environment and adapt to the new interpersonal relationships. Each student has different personalities and habits. We hope you can learn to respect others, be more tolerant and less fussy, understand more and complain less, to create a harmonious and upward environment for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid when things get tough, remember that the school is your strongest backing and the teachers and students around you will help you. We also hope that you will always be grateful, and repay the parents for nurturing, teachers for educating, and classmates for studying together with sincerity and kindness.

We hope you will work hard and steadfastly. Struggle is the brightest foundation of youth, and action is the most effective tempering of youth. In the current era, a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating, and China’s scientific and technological innovation is facing “bottleneck” problems in many fields. We hope that students will cherish the learning time at university, work tirelessly to increase their knowledge and improve their skills, deeply understand and grasp the trend of the times and the needs of the people of the country, focus on the international academic frontiers and the country’s major needs, dare to make breakthroughs and innovate, be courageous to practice to grow true abilities and skills through practical work, and turn the knowledge gained into the ability to solve practical problems. We expect that in the future, you will grow up to be the new engineering leading talents with strong innovation and practical abilities, as well as a sense of patriotism and international perspective.
