A few days ago, iF Design Award 2023 was announced. The team, composed of Teacher Chen Xiaoji and Student Sun Wenke and Luo Bincong, from Depart. of Industrial Design of this School, won the award with their works "SAMARA", which was the first time for Department of Industrial Design to win the top international industrial design award.
The iF Design Award was founded in 1953 by the oldest industrial design institution in Germany, and is known as the "Oscars in the design industry". The "IF Design Student Award" is one of the most important international top awards organized to discover young design talents in the world, for outstanding designers and design students around the world.
The iF Design Award, which called for design works in March, was based on the United Nations' "Sustainable Development Goals" as its design theme, and a judging panel of international experts selected 76 exciting, forward-thinking conceptual award works from 7,068 works from 41 countries and regions. The team's design works "SAMARA" was an unmanned seeding aerial vehicle for post-disaster ecological restoration of forests. The design was inspired by the shape of winged fruits in nature, and combined 3D printing technology and bionic design to make the seeds sown conform to specific planting needs, so that the seeds not only contained enough nutrients, but also the sowing range can be homogenized to improve the soil environment and increase the survival rate. The design could greatly improve resource utilization rate and provide a new pathway for post-disaster ecosystem restoration. This works was highly recognized by the Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Track for its forward-looking design concept and excellent problem-solving approach.
