Learning from Classroom Observation and Growing Up in Teaching Discussion
—— A Report on Teaching Observation and Discussion Activities of School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information
In order to further promote mutual learning and exchange among teachers, give full play to the leading, demonstration and radiation role of outstanding teachers, and improve the teachers' education and teaching level, CUG carried out the first teaching observation month activities in December this year. In accordance with the requirements of the university and the actual situation of this School, the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information has actively built an exchange platform and organized the teaching observation and discussion activities for new young teachers employed in the past five years.
The teaching observation and discussion activity is mainly divided into four parts. The first is to organize all teachers, especially new faculty members in the past five years, to observe the classroom teaching of outstanding teachers of the University; the second is to invite outstanding teachers of the School to share their teaching experience and show their teaching innovations; the third is for young teachers to exchange their feelings of observation and problems encountered in teaching; the fourth is to invite faculty supervisors to teach and solve the problems on the spot for the teachers participating in the seminar.
On December 13, Mr. Gao Di from the Department of Communication of this School held a public class on "Fundamentals of Digital Circuit Technology" in Room 406 of No. 1 Teaching Building, and many young teachers from the School observed the class. In the class, Mr. Gao interacted with students in multiple rounds by asking questions, and presented important knowledge points to students by showing videos based on a combination of multimedia and blackboard writing. The students could easily master the knowledge taught by the teacher in class. The atmosphere of the whole course was active and the students were full of energy. The teachers who participated in the observation summarized Mr. Gao's classroom teaching in the lecture notebook: Mr. Gao Di's lecture is clear, natural, fluent, and lively with infectious language, which is very worthy of our young teachers to learn and has great reference value for our future teaching experience and teaching methods.
During the school-wide observation and study, the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information held a teaching observation seminar on December 16. Qu Xianghua, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School, Li Bo, Deputy Dean of the School, teaching supervisors of the School, representatives of outstanding teachers and new faculty members in the past five years attended the meeting.
First of all, Li Bo, Deputy Dean of the School, made a review of the traditional experience formed in the teaching of the School, summarized the achievements of young teachers in teaching competitions at all levels in recent years, and explained the purpose of this seminar. He hoped that young teachers would carry out in-depth teaching exploration and practice, exchange and learn, continuously accumulate the teaching experience, improve the teaching ability, and build the undergraduate majors of the School into the national first-class.
At the seminar, two teachers, Guo Hongxiang, who is in charge of provincial high-quality online courses, and Hao Guocheng, who is in the top 10% of teaching evaluation for four consecutive years, made a wonderful teaching experience sharing and teaching innovation demonstration for new teachers in the past five years. Ms. Guo shared her views on curriculum overview, teaching design, teaching methods and implementation, and proposed the "three stages and nine steps" method for teaching process reengineering and process supervision. From the three stages of her own teaching, she talked about the perception and deepening of teaching from imparting knowledge and ability training to leading the three views, and concluded that education was not only to teach students and dispel doubts, but also to influence students with love. Starting from the function of the university classroom, and combining with his own experience, Mr. Hao analyzed the current teaching situation. On how to prepare before class, how to enrich the classroom process and how to summarize after class, he put forward the teaching mode of "being quiet but not rigid, live but not chaotic". He concluded that only by "investing more, thinking more and taking responsibility" in teaching can we truly take students as the center and cultivate students into excellent talents.
The sharing of teaching experiences by two outstanding teachers aroused great enthusiasm of the teachers present in the seminar, and everyone spoke up and expressed their opinions. Some teachers shared their feelings and reflections after observing the course; some shared their confusions in the course of the lesson, such as students' lack of interest and concentration in class; some simply asked the two teachers and supervisors for advice on the spot. The teachers discussed different problems and spoke warmly in a harmonious atmosphere. The whole discussion was not only relaxed and pleasant, but also focused on the theme. The teachers said they benefited a lot from this activity, not only learning the teaching methods, teaching means and teaching philosophy of excellent teachers, but also realizing that to be a good teacher, one needs to have responsibility, commitment and dedication.
Mr. Li Li and Mr. Fu Huaming, the supervisors of the School, analyzed and summarized the questions and confusions raised by the young teachers and answered them. From how to be a good teacher, Mr. Li Li pointed out that young teachers need to do "four things" in teaching. First, we must be serious about teaching and be willing to devote ourselves to it; second, we must pay special attention to the students, so that they will like the teacher and then like the subject; third, there are millions of good teachers, and we must have our own characteristics and positioning; fourth, we must learn more, listen more, read more and think more in teaching. Mr. Fu Huaming believed that it was very necessary to build a platform for teaching discussion and exchange with the increase of new teachers in the School. He also gave on-the-spot guidance to young teachers based on his years of teaching experience and the problems found in the supervisory process. He suggested that: there are differences between schools and institutes on the surface, but the inner part is unified, and research and teaching can be well unified; undergraduate education and graduate education are different, and it is not possible to do one-to-one training, and it is necessary to pay attention to the improvement of individuals as well as to take into account that students with poor foundation do not lag behind; young teachers should pay attention to the cultivation of their own quality, implement every aspect of teaching, treat teaching work with patience and love, and fully enjoy the teaching.
Finally, Qu Xianghua, secretary of the School, made a concluding speech, pointing out that as a large undergraduate teaching school, teaching was the lifeline and the foundation of the School. There are many new faculty members in recent years, and the task of teaching transfer is heavy, so how to let the new teachers change their roles and devote themselves to teaching and grow up as soon as possible is a big problem for the School. The School hopes to build a learning and communication platform and invite excellent teachers to share and teach their good experiences and methods, so as to effectively realize the transmission of teaching in the School. At the same time, Secretary Qu also put forward several requirements for the School to further deepen teaching reform and young teachers. First, teaching sharing and communication need to be done year after year, not only for classroom teaching sharing, but also for practical teaching demonstration. Second, the teaching evaluation system should be open, reasonable and transparent to ensure that teachers know what the problems are and to promote teaching by evaluation. Third, the excellent teaching team or teachers should be rewarded at different levels, with different contents and in different ways to guide teachers to actively engage in teaching. Fourth, young teachers should learn more, communicate more, pay more attention to students in teaching, combine research and teaching, and strive to be a good teacher with emotion, responsibility and patience.
