On June 12, 2021, 2021 Fifth International Conference on Robotics and Automation Science (ICRAS 2021) was solemnly held in the form of combination of on-site conference and online conference. The conference was co-sponsored by the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and IEEE. It was aimed to promote academic exchanges and cooperation in the fields of robotics and automation, understand and learn foreign advanced ideas and technologies, and improve the academic development level of robotics and automation related fields in China.

The conference invited many famous scholars and researchers from China, the United States, Britain, Japan, Peru, Turkey, Botswana, Thailand, Jordan and other countries and regions. 77 delegates attended the conference, including 11 foreign delegates.

The conference officially began at 9 a.m. on June 12. At the beginning of the conference, Professor Ding Huafeng, chairman of the conference and Dean of School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), delivered a welcome speech. On behalf of all members of the conference committee, he expressed his gratitude to the scholars who attended the conference on the spot, and also to some participants who could not come to the scene due to the epidemic but still insisted on attending the online conference. Later, he also delivered an opening speech for the conference. He expressed his belief that the excellent reports and discussions of experts would promote the cutting-edge research in the field of robotics and automation, enhance understanding in the field and promote cooperation. Seven well-known experts at home and abroad were invited to make keynote reports, including Professor Shugen Ma (IEEE FELLOW) from Ritsumeikan University, Professor Hong Yiguang (IEEE FELLOW) from Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Science, Professor Graziano Chesi (IEEE FELLOW) from the University of Hong Kong, Professor Tao Bo from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Kheng Lim Goh from Newcastle University, Professor Sümer Şahin from University of Bakhsehir, Turkey, and Professor Fei Yanqiong from Robotics Research Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The conference lasted for two days. During the conference, on the 12th, experts gave keynote reports, and then the on-site authors divided it into three sessions according to the theme of the report, which were held in three venues at the same time. On the 13th, according to the theme of the report, the online authors divided it into five sessions, which were held in two venues at the same time. Participants from Beihang University, National University of Defense Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Wuhan University, Tongji University, Anhui University, Zhejiang University, University of Bridgeport, The University of Electro-Communications, Jordan University of Science and Technology, etc. reported and discussed robot design and control technology, mechanical design and aerospace engineering, computer and electronic engineering, intelligent robot design, industrial automation and logistics engineering, robot and unmanned system, mechanical and control engineering, image and signal processing, etc.

The conference not only invited many professors from famous universities at home and abroad, but also attracted scholars at home and abroad to participate in it. The exchange of ideas and experience between domestic and foreign scholars had promoted the academic exchanges and cooperation in the fields of robotics and automation, and also provided new directions and ideas for the rapid development of the next generation of intelligent robots.
