“During the epidemic, teachers and students have overcome the difficulties and insisted on no suspension of classes. This spirit is very admirable. I believe that the epidemic will end up soon. At that time, we can return to the campus and the classroom to continue learning.” This was President Wang Yanxin's speech to the teachers and students in the online classroom of “Metal Materials and Heat Treatment” on March 9. In the sudden epidemic, the front line of teachers was the classroom. In order to ensure no suspension of classes, the teaching team formed by Xu Linhong, Yang Yang and Liu Hao from the curriculum team of “Metal Materials and Heat Treatment” overcame many inconveniences during the epidemic, carefully organized teaching, set up the online classroom, strived for no degradation, no suspension of teaching and learning and minimized the impacts of the epidemic on teaching progress and learning effects.

“Metal Materials and Heat Treatment” is a professional foundation course that places equal emphasis on theory and practice. It is a learning difficulty for the sophomore who are new to a professional course. How to seize the essences of this course in just 13 lessons through the non-traditional teaching mode of virtual network platform? In response to the lack of textbook and related teaching materials, the teachers from the curriculum team adopted QQ group to deliver the messages, release the learning resources, answer questions and dispel the doubts. Based on the existing state-level high-quality MOOC course resources, Mr. Xu Linhong, aimed at the fragmented and refined knowledge design features of MOOC, used the network platform to build the online classrooms, and conducted live lectures on the key and difficult knowledge. At the same time, the curriculum team actively organized various teaching resources such as advanced heat treatment process videos and electronic teaching materials to expand students’ knowledge. They adopted multiple live learning methods such as live online classes and MOOC video online classes to maintain teaching quality and learning progress.

A good course requires not only good teachers, but also good students to support it. In the live online teaching, the students in 5 classes, Grade 2018, with the major of mechanical engineering, actively participated in the course, and the classroom attendance rate could basically reach up to 100%. The students listened, took notes, and thought and asked questions. After adaptation and learn in the online classroom for a month, the students generally believed that although online teaching did have some disadvantages, after all, it was impossible to communicate with each other face-to-face and in-depth, the teachers’ concern and carefully prepared classrooms made up for this shortcoming. In addition, the rich and diverse contents of the class had greatly stimulated the students’ interests, and the interaction in the classrooms had greatly improved the sense of participation of students and made students implement “no suspension of classes” in a better way.

After listening to Mr. Xu Linhong's live lesson carefully, the president gave great affirmation to the effect of live online teaching. At the same time, he thought that the idea of implanting sustainable development and a safe environment in the traditional curriculum by Mr. Xu Linhong was very suitable for the current environment in the epidemic crisis. He also put forward valuable opinions on the teaching methods of the follow-up classrooms. Both the teachers from the curriculum team and the students of the course group were greatly encouraged and expressed that they would engrave the school motto of “working hard, keeping modest and pursuing truth and pragmatism” into their hearts and make it better in the follow-up learning and teaching!
