National Positive and Virtuous Youth Han Lei: Devoting himself to Learning and Mounting to the Top

      　CUG News (Reported by Yu Xiaozhou, Du Yu and Wang Xiangdong) On Apr. 28, CCTV News Broadcast issued the list of National Positive and Virtuous Youth in 2020, in which Han Lei, a doctoral student in School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) was impressively listed. After the news was released, it attracted wide attention in the circle of teachers, students and friends in CUG and won more likes for Han Lei in succession. Han Lei devoted himself to learning, mounted to the top, totally issued 15 SCI papers and was granted 10 patents for invention. He constantly strived to become stronger and fought against the disease. After encephaloma was confirmed, he still strengthened his confidence, actively accepted the treatment and continued to put efforts into scientific research. During this period, under the leadership of his tutor Professor Ding Huafeng, as a key research, he participated in research and development of the first large-sized hydraulic shovel excavator with independent intellectual property and broke through the long-term foreign monopoly. His inspiration story of being positive and virtuous encouraged numerous CUGERs to pursue their youth dreams.

　　Devoting Himself to Learning and Everlastingly Mounting to the Top

Han Lei came from Inner Mongolia and was greatly interested in the scientific and technical innovation in his childhood. He had an explicit plan for life and actively explored it when he just entered the university. In the eyes of the teachers and the students, he was a workaholic and an expert in scientific research. Just because he had always maintained a rigorous and assiduous academic attitude towards learning, he had made great achievements in academic papers, scientific research programs, patents for invention and so on for many years.

In 2010, when he entered China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Han Lei was enrolled in the lab of Professor Wen Guojun in School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information and did some research programs with his senior fellows. In Grade Two, he established a team to take part in 7^th “Challenge Cup· Youth in Wo” College Student Business Plan Competition in Hubei Province and won the silver award. Subsequently, he led the team as the first principal to actively prepare for 13^th “Challenge Cup” National College Student Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, overcame various difficulties in time and teamwork and finally won the second prize. He was recommended for the postgraduate in CUG due to his excellent performance, studied under Professor Ding Huafeng for successive master-doctor program, devoted himself to the research on modern engineering equipment and parallel robots and launched his scientific research. He went out early and came back at dust and spent most of his time in the lab. He was immersed in academic research and successively won Scholarship of Alumni in 1984, iPearl 72911 Scholarship and Third Prize for Petroleum Equipment Innovative Design Competition For China Postgraduate, published 15 SCI papers and was granted 10 patents for invention.

During the doctoral period, Han Lei as a key researcher, participated in the research on new-type hydraulic shovel excavator presided by his tutor Professor Ding Huafeng. He closely cooperated with his team members, continuously broke through the technical problems, overcame the unthinkable pains and torments from the disease and made a great breakthrough. In Apr. 2018, the first large-sized hydraulic shovel excavator SY850H with independent intellectual property in China was delivered in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. The successful research and development of this model emblematized China possessed the independent innovation capability in fundamental theory and technology for the large-sized and super-large-sized hydraulic shovel excavator and it thoroughly broke through the long-term foreign monopoly of the patented technology for the hydraulic shovel excavator. At present, the excavator has been put in use in the surface mine in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province. “what we do is very interesting and it is worth the efforts and the hardworking of the research team!”, said by Han Lei.

　　Making unremitting efforts to improve himself and bravely fighting against the disease

When Han Lei devoted himself to scientific research and planed to serve the social and economic development with everything he had gotten, the fate played a joke on him. In the summer of 2016, Han Lei’s headache for a long time was diagnosed as encephaloma. From then on he was always being on the rough road to learning while fighting against the disease.

Confronted with the medical diagnosis, Han Lei felt hopeless and had no choice, just like most of the people. However, as an optimistic boy, he was not frightened by the disease, instead, he made preparations for anti-encephaloma and actively cooperated with the doctors for treatment. On the way to fighting against the disease, he had never forgotten the research and development of the first hydraulic shovel excavator with independent intellectual property. During the treatment period, his bed was piled up with the professional books. As long as his illness took a turn for the better, he immediately devoted himself to learning and scientific research and worked over 6 hours every day. "In tackling the technical problems in research and development, I am not a patient in my opinion, in fact, I am well. Should I suspend my work, I would make blind and disorderly conjectures". After half-year's treatment, he immediately returned the campus and put more effort into the research when he felt well. With the tenacious struggle and the joint effort of the team members, great breakthrough was made in the research of the first large-sized hydraulic shovel excavator with independent intellectual property in China, which was successfully delivered and put into use.

In Oct. 2018, the disease recurred again, which imposed risk to him. He was more deliberate and actively cooperated in treatment. If permitted by the body, he would continue the innovative design of the large-sized excavator and the research on the parallel robot.

　　Two years ago, Han Lei in good health was a leading player of the soccer team of CUG as well as an important member of the soccer team for victory. Under his leadership, the soccer team won the champion in College Champions League in Wuhan and other awards and was often praised as the God of Goalkeeper of CUG. Just because of the character of tenacity and sunshine endowed by scientific research and football, when fighting against the disease twice, Han Lei made a great breakthrough in scientific research while conquering the disease.  

During his second recreation for the disease, Han Lei published 4 high-level papers. His spirit of self-improvement and writing the papers in the ward was widely reported by the media and encouraged more and more people, and he was granted "Self-improvement Model of National College Students" in 2018. Only 10 students won this unusual glory all over the country.

　Entrepreneurship twice and making solid progress in the life

　　In Apr. 2014, Han Lei began to start up his own business and he established Wuhan Zhongdi Shuishi Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd with the students in School of Environmental Studies and acted as the marketing manager. It was an arduous journey for his entrepreneurship. At one time, he wrote the report before dawn and investigated the market in the morning of the next day. Meanwhile, he also made preparations for the road show activities. He almost slept only for 4 hours every day in the initial stage of entrepreneurship. One year later, he was sick from overwork and his illness was diagnosed as encephaloma by the doctor. In the recreation period, he could not hold his love for scientific research and entrepreneurship and red a large number of professional books in his spare time.

　　“One person's ability is limited while a team's power is unlimited”. In Sept. 2016, after his disease was improved, he convoked several partners, incorporated Wuhan WILL Robot Technology Co., Ltd after thorough investigation, analysis, coordination and preparation in combination with the professional background, acted as the legal representative and CEO of the company and actively pushed forward the transformation of the scientific payoffs. Around the research and development of the product, the company established WILL scientific research team, which was composed of 4 post-doctors and doctors, over 10 postgraduates and nearly 10 undergraduates.

   WILL team made full use of the advantages of the discipline, focused on the investment hotspot and direction of intelligent robot and transformed the cutting-edge scientific payoffs into the high-tech project. It researched and manufactured various robots including education robots, industrial robots and special-purpose robots. In less than two months, it successfully received the order of RMB 800,000 Yuan and the annual sales amount reached up to RMB 1,000,000 Yuan. Besides research and development, the company also provided the machines externally. Based on the excellent innovation and entrepreneurship ability, he won the title of "College Student Entrepreneurship Pioneer in Hongshan District, Wuhan City". When the company was growing rapidly, his disease recurred, as a result, he had to temporarily give up his dream of entrepreneurship once more.

　　The experience in entrepreneurship twice made Han Lei aware that it was important to put the scientific payoffs into place, push forward the scientific payoffs out of the lab and develop the products for industrial application so as to accomplish the transformation of the scientific payoff to the social productivity. Just because he aware of the transformation of the key point of scientific research to the industrial application, he actively participated in the research on the first large-sized hydraulic shovel excavator with independent intellectual property in China.

　　During COVID-2019, Han Lei complied with home quarantine, he coached the students in Huanghua Village online for mathematics and physics for National College Entrance Examination in his home in Bordered Yellow Banner, Inner Mongolia, helped them to resolve the problems and shared his experience with them to make them more confident of National College Entrance Examination. He also persisted in the scientific research and successively published two high quality papers.
