The Final of 2021 Freshman Cup Debate Competition of School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information was Successfully Held

From Oct. 3 to Oct. 30 this year, the Debate Team of School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information held the 2021 Freshman Cup Debate Competition, with eight senior debaters elected by the debate teams as the captains of each of the eight teams. The freshmen actively and enthusiastically signed up and used their spare time to brainstorm and show their youthfulness in the preliminaries on October 7. After a round, four teams were eliminated. The four winning teams experienced preparation, discussion, running-in and modification.

On October 15, “I am right team and Whatever we say is right team broke through the semi-finals and entered the finals.

 

 

 

At 16:40 on October 30, the finals kicked off in Room 308, No. 2 Teaching Building.

The final debate was titled: Naruto's "happy-ending" youth/Dunk Master’s "regret-ending" youth is more moving.

Positive side: I am right team  VS  Negative side: Whatever we say is right team.

 

 

 

First, both sides introduced themselves. The competition officially started and the arguments of the positive side were as follows:

1. Arguing for "enticing" and "moving" based on the twofold definition of moving; 

2. The meaning of "moving" is to make people yearn for it, and the happy-ending youth is even more attractive because we yearn for it.

3. On the basis of this argument, it is divided into two points: "empathy and yearning make the happy-ending youth more moving" and "the happy-ending youth is more moving".

The positive debaters adopted a safer line of argument: the first debater first made his argument and clearly stated his side's point of view. When questioned, one must not sway from one's point of view. Then, the second debater emphasized that the focus of this discussion was the ending and to compare which ending was more moving, because the process of both was similar. Refuted the opposition's point of view, and then emphasized their second point of view, which was not present in the opposing viewpoint. The third debate was mainly responsible for questioning and picking out the loopholes of the opposing side. The fourth debater concluded with a speech, reviewing the battlefield and deepening the theme.

 

Opposing arguments:

1. Regret-ending youth is more moving and emotionally touching than happy-ending youth;

2. Regret-ending youth can enlighten the audience and have more aftertastes;

3. Regret-ending youth is more likely to resonate with people emotionally.

However, the opposing party adopted a relatively novel argument idea. First, through a simple interpretation of the impact of these two cartoons on people, they analyzed that regret-ending youth was more touching; then, through an analysis of the characteristics and influence of the happy-ending youth and regret-ending youth, they elaborated that regret-ending youth was more enlightening to the audience; finally, through specific examples, they showed the aftertaste and influence of regret-ending youth, which was deeply rooted in people's hearts.

 

 

 

 

After nearly 40 minutes of fierce competition, the audience witnessed the wonderful arguments of the first debater, the concise refutation of the second debater, the sense of pressure brought by the third debater and the refined questioning and concluding arguments of the fourth debater. With the conclusion of the fourth debater of the positive side, the finals came to an end and the audience actively asked questions and had in-depth communication with the debaters after the game. The five judges also made comments and guidance on the performance of the debaters. Ren Kaichen, the former captain of the debate team, said: In this debate, the two sides fought with each other, showing their style, and the exchange between the four debaters of the positive side and the four debaters of the negative side was especially wonderful. Both responded quickly, spoke succinctly and forcefully, and demonstrated strong thinking skills.

 

 

 

Finally, Mr. Xu Zichao, the chairman of the debate team, announced the result of the final: the winner of the final was “I am right team and the best debater was Chen Junjie. After the competition, both debaters took a group photo. So far, the 2021 Freshman Cup Debate Competition of School of Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information came to an end.
